£37.9m in sales.
Goalhanger generated 321% growth in three years.
Almost everyone credits Gary Lineker. They are missing what built it.

THE SETUP

Jack Davenport launched The Rest Is History in November 2020. Nine months in, he told Esquire, he and Tony Pastor decided they needed to build a company around it.

The Rest Is Politics launched in 2022 and kept the network name. Pastor later said their best way of launching a new show was promoting it inside their own podcasts.

By 2023 Gary Lineker had joined to front The Rest Is Football and most people decided that explained everything. One of Britain's most recognisable faces, doing what he does best.

Fame explains one show. It does not explain why a spy podcast fronted by two total unknowns also opened at number one, in the same network, within a year.

If Gary Lineker was not the answer, what was?

THE MOMENT

November 2024. David McCloskey, a former CIA analyst, and Gordon Corera, the BBC's security correspondent, front a new show called The Rest Is Classified. Neither has a podcast audience of his own.

Unknown hosts. No following.

Seven days later it has 200,000 downloads and sits at number one on the UK Apple Podcasts chart.

Tony Pastor said the same week the result showed a new show could break through in a crowded market off the back of what he called a strong promotional network, according to The Media Leader.

By November 2025 the pattern had repeated enough times that three shows, spanning history, politics and science, held the top three spots on the UK chart at once.

THE NUMBERS (2025)
  • Revenue: £37.9m, self reported to the Sunday Times 100

  • Three year growth: 321% CAGR, per the same submission

  • Subscribers: 250,000 paying members, worth roughly £15m a year, per Beauhurst

  • Reach: 70 million monthly streams across 14 shows,

  • Staff: grew from 7 to roughly 80 by 2026

  • The Chernin Group bought a minority stake in January 2026. No valuation disclosed.

None of these numbers explain how an audience of zero produced a number one chart position in a week.

THE PLAYBOOK
1. The audience nobody had to find

→ Every podcast network pays to find an audience from zero, every time it launches a new show.

→ Davenport built one audience once. Every new show gets access into it.

→ Gary Lineker's face carried The Rest Is Football through its first week. The Rest Is Classified had no face at all and still opened at number one.

→ Every future show launches into an audience that already exists.

2. One ad, sold three times

→ A single advertising deal used to buy one channel: audio.

→ Goalhanger started selling the same slot as audio, video and clips together.

→ Adding video on Spotify lifted advertising revenue 63%, according to The Media Leader.

→ Every new ad deal now sells three formats for the price of making one.

3. The one thing Neville could not copy

→ Most media companies recruit hosts for the audience they already bring with them.

→ Goalhanger pairs institutional experts instead. A historian with a historian, a politician with a politician, each pairing chemistry tested before a new series.

→ Alastair Campbell got one shortlist of Tories he could bear to sit across from. Rory Stewart was what was left. The pairing sold out the O2 within two years.

→ Gary Neville had the fame and a three year head start. His revenue fell from £13.1m to £11.6m across the years Goalhanger's grew fastest.

The same audience that makes every new show free to launch is also the audience that has to trust every show equally. Goalhanger has never had one fail in public. Nobody knows what a bad launch would cost the other thirteen, or how many identical shows one audience can carry before it stops telling them apart.

THE CLOSE

Goalhanger did not build fourteen podcasts. It built one audience and gave it fourteen options.

That is why it worked. Gary Lineker's fame only ever had to carry one show. The same audience did the rest, listening to podcast after podcast, without Goalhanger paying to find a single new listener.

Gary Lineker got people to press play on one of them. Jack Davenport built the reason they stayed for the other thirteen.

The show is new. The audience isn't.
