96% of sellers got less than their online quote.
One branch cut its offers by 47% in a single week.
We Buy Any Car became a household name by paying sellers less than they could get elsewhere.

THE SETUP
96% of sellers who use We Buy Any Car end up getting paid less than their online quote. It's still one of the most recognisable ways to sell a car in Britain.
Founded in 2006 by brothers Noel and Darren McKee, offering an instant online valuation and same day payment instead of a private sale.
Bought by BCA, Britain's biggest vehicle auction house, in 2013. BCA itself was taken private by TDR Capital for £1.9bn in 2019 and renamed Constellation Automotive Group the following year.
A 2010 Office of Fair Trading investigation found 96% of sellers received less than they'd been quoted. Leaked internal documents showed markdown targets set at a minimum of 28%.
WBAC succeeded because of two things:
It built the fastest, least stressful way to get rid of a car, trusted enough that sellers use it even knowing they'll be paid less than they could get elsewhere.
Then its owner turned every car it buys into stock for one of Britain's largest vehicle auction houses.
A WBAC sale doesn't end at the till. It's the first step in a chain that runs through BCA's auctions and sometimes Cinch, the group's online retailer, before the car reaches its next buyer.

THE PLAYBOOK
1. Turn the quote into a hook, not a price
WBAC gives every seller an instant online valuation, then uses an in person inspection, staff call it “the chip”, to bring the number down once the seller has already agreed to sell.
The Office of Fair Trading found 96% of sellers between 2009 and 2010 received less than they were quoted. Leaked internal emails called a 16% average markdown insufficient and set 28% as the requirement.
In one week, WBAC bought 3,043 cars at an average of £590 below the online offer. A seller who has already driven to a branch and handed over the keys usually accepts the lower number rather than start again somewhere else. The sunk cost of the trip does as much work as the car's actual condition.

Takeaway: People find it harder to walk away once they've already decided to sell. The quote's only job is to get them to that decision.

2. Feed the machine
A normal car buying website matches a seller with a buyer, takes a fee or a spread and its job ends there. WBAC is part of Constellation, alongside BCA and Cinch, an online used car retailer. WBAC acquires the car. BCA provides the auction infrastructure that moves it on to trade buyers. Some of that stock then reaches Cinch and a private buyer.
In FY23, WBAC bought cheaper cars on purpose. Revenue per vehicle fell from £9,100 to £7,100 and volumes dropped 13% to 491,000 cars. Constellation's own accounts say this was to match what BCA's auctions needed. 35% of BCA's FY21 auction stock came from vehicle buying, showing how directly the front end supplies the machine behind it.
Exactly how much margin sits with WBAC, BCA or Cinch on any one car isn't disclosed. What's clear is that WBAC only has to get the car through the door. Three parts of the same group can profit from it afterwards.

Takeaway: A weak deal at one end of the chain can still be the right one, as long as you own what happens at the other end.

3. Build the parts a competitor cannot copy
Motorway is a marketplace. It connects sellers directly with dealers and never takes ownership of the car itself. WBAC does take ownership, which is what lets it feed BCA's auctions and Cinch's resale afterwards, something a pure marketplace has no way to do.
WBAC paired decades of national TV advertising with more than 550 physical branches, funded by a private equity owner that refinanced £1.8bn of debt in 2025 to keep the network standing.
WBAC held 22.9% of UK search clicks for online car selling in late 2025, just behind Carwow's 24.3%. Motorway sat at 8.5%, despite paying sellers more for the same car.

Takeaway: Price can be beaten. Decades of infrastructure and billions in capital can't be bought overnight.

ONE MORE THING
Avril Palmer-Baunack has driven Constellation's strategy for close to a decade. Her background is vehicle salvage, logistics and industrial turnarounds, not marketing. An unusual pedigree for a company whose public identity is built entirely on adverts and jingles.
WBAC's founders, Noel and Darren McKee, exited through the 2013 sale to BCA. The group itself changed hands twice more before TDR Capital bought it outright in 2019 and renamed it Constellation Automotive Group.
People think the “Chip” is the strategy: a company that gets away with paying less because sellers are already committed by the time they find out. That story is fifteen years old and a regulator has already proved it happened.
What's newer and mostly undisclosed, is the machine behind it. WBAC acquires the car. BCA runs the auction that moves it on. Some of that stock reaches a buyer again through Cinch. Exactly how the margin splits between those three steps isn't public. What's clear is that WBAC doesn't need to win on price, because three parts of the same group can profit from the same car after the sale.
The discount was never the clever bit. One car can pay WBAC at the buy, BCA at the auction, and Cinch at the resale. The seller only ever sees the first cheque.
